🏡 Missouri Ends Capital Gains Tax: What That Means for Yo

Starting January 1, 2025, Missouri will no longer charge state tax on something called capital gains.

🧾 What are Capital Gains?

A capital gain is the money you make when you sell something for more than you paid for it — like:

  • A house

  • Stocks or investments

  • A business

  • Cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin)

So, if you bought a home for $200,000 and sold it for $250,000, that $50,000 is a capital gain.

🟢 What’s New?

Missouri passed a law that says people no longer have to pay Missouri state income tax on these gains.
This makes Missouri the first state in the U.S. to fully remove the capital gains tax for individuals.

You’ll still pay federal taxes on these profits, but nothing to the state of Missouri.

⚖️ Why Did They Do This?

Lawmakers say this change could:

  • Encourage people to invest or start businesses in Missouri

  • Make the state more attractive to people who are selling valuable things

  • Help people keep more of the money they earn

    🗓️ When Does It Start?

This new law applies to sales made on or after January 1, 2025.

    🧠 What Should You Do?

    If you’re planning to:

    • Sell a home

    • Cash out investments

    • Transfer a business

It may be worth talking to a tax expert or financial advisor to see how this new rule could affect you.

    📝 The Bottom Line

Missouri has become the first state to eliminate capital gains tax for individuals.
This move could mean more money in the pockets of people who sell major assets, but it also raises important questions about fairness and the future of state funding.

It’s a historic change, and one to watch closely.
